The Brands Worth Knowing
The premium cigar world has its own canon — a set of names that serious smokers recognize and return to consistently. If you’re new, these names can feel like a foreign language. Here’s a plain-language introduction to the most important ones.
Drew Estate
A Nicaraguan-based company founded by Jonathan Drew and Marvin Samuels in New York in the late 1990s. Drew Estate disrupted the traditional cigar industry with unconventional marketing and, more importantly, with Liga Privada — a line of ultra-premium cigars using rare Brazilian Mata Fina wrapper that became one of the most sought-after smokes in production. The company also produces Undercrown, Herrera Esteli, and the Acid line of infused cigars.
Padrón
José Orlando Padrón founded his company in 1964 with $600 and a single cigar factory in Nicaragua. Sixty years later, Padrón is considered by many to be the gold standard in premium cigar production — known for exceptional consistency, all-Nicaraguan tobacco, and a commitment to traditional manufacturing that hasn’t wavered. The 1964 Anniversary series and the Serie 1926 are benchmarks of the craft.
Oliva
A family-owned company founded by Melanio Oliva in Cuba in the 1880s, which moved to Nicaragua after the Cuban revolution. The Oliva family grows its own tobacco in Nicaragua’s Jalapa and Estelí valleys — vertical integration that gives them extraordinary control over quality. The Serie V and Serie V Melanio are considered among the best Nicaraguan cigars in production.
My Father Cigars
Founded by José “Pepin” Garcia and his son Jaime in Nicaragua, My Father has become one of the most decorated cigar companies in modern history — winning Cigar Aficionado’s Cigar of the Year twice in a decade. The Flor de Las Antillas and Le Bijou 1922 are the standout lines, both known for rich, complex Nicaraguan puro blends with exceptional construction.
Rocky Patel
Rocky Patel entered the cigar business as a hobby in the 1990s while working as a Hollywood entertainment lawyer. The hobby became a company, and the company became one of the most recognized names in premium cigars. Rocky Patel Premium Cigars produces a wide range of expressions from mild to full-bodied, with the Vintage series (1990, 1992, 1999) being the most widely known and recommended for new smokers.
Perdomo
Nick Perdomo founded his company in Nicaragua in the 1990s and became one of the first premium cigar makers to emphasize aged tobacco as a defining characteristic. Perdomo grows and ages its own tobacco — some reserve lines use leaf aged 10 years before rolling. The Reserve Champagne is the entry point; the 10th Anniversary and Reserve 83 Series are the showpieces.
