Buyer’s Guide — Bourbon

The Best Bourbons Under $80

The $50–80 tier is where bourbon gets serious. More age, more proof, more complexity — and still no lottery required to buy a bottle.

Why This Tier Matters

The under-$50 tier is where you build your palate. The $50–80 range is where you start making deliberate choices. More age statements, more single barrel expressions, more barrel-proof offerings — and the complexity gap between these bottles and the entry tier is genuine and meaningful.

None of these require a store relationship or a lottery entry. They’re premium bottles that are actually available.

Blanton’s Single Barrel (~$65) — The Icon

The bottle that launched the premium bourbon category in 1984, and it still earns its reputation. Hand-dipped wax, a stopper shaped like a horse mid-gallop, and 93 proof of genuinely excellent bourbon inside. Vanilla, caramel, cinnamon, and a long warm finish. Getting harder to find at retail, but still worth the effort.

Elijah Craig Barrel Proof (~$60) — The Overperformer

Released three times a year in small batches, each bottled straight from the barrel without dilution or chill filtration. Proof varies by batch (typically 120–140 proof) but the quality is consistent: rich, intensely flavored, and one of the best expressions at any price point. A few drops of water transform it.

Four Roses Single Barrel (~$55) — The Most Distinctive

Where the Small Batch blends four recipes, the Single Barrel uses just one — the OBSV recipe, which produces a floral, fruity, full-bodied expression with notes of ripe plum, vanilla, and long spicy finish. One of the most unique flavor profiles in bourbon at this price point.

Russell’s Reserve Single Barrel (~$70) — The Craftsman’s Pick

Eddie and Jimmy Russell hand-select each barrel for this expression — 110 proof, unfiltered, with the depth of age and the character of Wild Turkey’s high-rye mash. Leather, dark fruit, toasted oak, and a finish that runs long and complex. A serious bottle for serious sessions.

Knob Creek Single Barrel Reserve (~$60) — The Bold Choice

Individual barrel selection at 120 proof means every bottle is slightly different — and every bottle is excellent. Big oak, caramel, and dark fruit with a finish that demands your attention. One of the best high-proof options available without hunting.
